SAC is not a centre that does counselling, but an association for competent counsellors in Singapore. Please visit our website under Directory Search, you can find a list of registered counsellors whom you may wish to seek consultation from. These counsellors have all gone through rigorous training, have at least 600 hours of counselling work done, and has been supervised for at least 60 hours by qualified clinical supervisors for them to attain the registered counsellor status.

To become a Registered Counsellors, you must first qualify to be Clinical Member. Please refer the website under the Registry. Once you qualified as SAC Registered Counsellors, you can apply to be Registered Clinical Supervisor. Please refer to the website under Registered Clinical Supervisor.
Yes, you can apply to be a provisional clinical member and continue to work towards to become a clinical member and registered counsellor in the future. Otherwise, if you can apply to be an associate member, or an allied member if you are working in the field of mental health.
Yes, lay people who are interested in supporting counselling can become associate members.
If you graduated from SAC recognised programme, you can start clocking the hours after the course has ended. The training and practicum hours cannot be considered. You can apply to be a Provisional Clinical Member first and start accumulating your counselling hours. You should have clocked at least 600 hours of clinical work and 60 hours of clinical supervision before you can qualify as clinical member and subsequently registered counsellor.
SAC’s EXCO meet every two months to review applications. Upon approval, you will be notified via email to make online payment and an official letter will be emailed to you once payment is made.
According to the Constitution, applicant must complete 600 hours of face to face counselling within a minimum period of two years, subject to a maximum of three years. This time period need not start immediately after graduation, but must consist of one block period of time that is completed within seven years upon graduation. The recording of hours will begin only when coursework has been completed. The supervision, which must be by an SAC Registered Counsellor or SAC Registered Supervisor, or a Clinical Supervisor approved by the institute will consist of at least one hour of clinical supervision for each ten hours of counselling practice.
The ratio for Group Clinical Supervision versus Individual Clinical Supervision is 70:30, i.e. equivalent to a maximum of 40 hours of Group Supervision and a minimum of 20 hours of Individual Supervision.

As for signing off your supervision log, under the Constitution, it is stated that "The supervision, which must be by an SAC Registered Counsellor or SAC Registered Supervisor, or a Clinical Supervisor approved by the institute.
SAC allows max a three-month extension to meet the requirement on a case-by-case basis. You may email to register board to seek approval for extension. Failing which, your name will be removed from Registry if you do not renew.
With competence and professionalism comes responsibility. Like other international counselling associations of impeccable standing, being a recognised/licensed therapist means that there is a high volume of counselling work conducted, and with it comes the responsibility to protect the interest of the client, the practitioner and the practice. Being required to have professional indemnity means that one has reached a certain professional standing. This professional indemnity also protects the member should the member be involved overseas or on international platforms for counselling, consultation, clinical supervision or training.

Your organization’s group Professional Indemnity policy will cover your requirement if you are a Registered Counsellor. However, we recommend you to purchase Professional Indemnity for yourself, as the policy will no longer cover your practice when you leave the service. Nevertheless, clients whom you have counselled during your term in the organization can still choose to pursue legal action after you have resigned, and you may have to handle the legal matters without any insurance coverage. Yes, if you have been a Clinical Member and received accreditation previously, you can remain as a clinical member even if you no longer renew your accreditation (subject to payment of membership fees).
Membership lasts for a lifetime (subject to payment of membership fees, renewed every year). Members are required to write in to to resign as a member. However, if prompt payment for membership renewal accreditation is not received, membership and accreditation status may be automatically cancelled.

The membership renewal cycle is in January of each calendar year. The Annual Membership Fee for all categories is $80.00 (subject to pro-rated).

If you are a clinical member but not a Registered Counsellor, it means that at some point of time, you may have lapsed the renewal of your Registered Counsellor status.

To reinstate your Registered Counsellor status, you need to clock 400 hours of clinical hours within the previous two (2) years, 50 hours of continuing professional education, purchase Professional Indemnity and pay the necessary fees to be listed on the Register. Your name will then be reinstated on the Register.

Accreditation Status

There are different categories of SAC membership that you can apply for depending on your eligibility. You need not necessarily apply for accreditation as a "Registered Counsellor" or "Registered Clinical Supervisor" to be a member. Being accredited means being recognised as a qualified professional and currently practising as a counsellor. However, you do need to be a SAC member in order to apply for accreditation.

Yes.   SAC holds its Annual General Meeting in March each year, and other events like In Conversation with the EXCO and workshop/events for members only.  Please refer to the events calendar periodically for more details.


SAC has an Ethics Board that considers best practices in counselling. If you wish to report the matter, or seek advice on what to do with the information, you can email us. The Ethics Board will investigate to the best of their ability. However, we are only able to attend to practitioners who are official members of SAC. The Ethics Board or the EXCO may propose other options for you to pursue the matter.
